Southampton is a major port and most of our guests who stay with us here at the Blue Keys Hotel have travelled to us from countries around the world, via cruise ship.
Cruise ship vacations are an incredible way to see the world but if you’ve never been on a cruise before, we want to give you some tips to help you prepare and make your experience as stress-free and enjoyable as possible:
Pre-Departure Check List
Make sure you complete all of the necessary documents before you travel. Deadlines will vary depending on who you travel with so check out their website and don’t leave this until the last minute.
Always check with your cruise company to see exactly what you need but forms usually include:
- Pre-departure questionnaire
- Insurance documents
- Proof of vaccinations
And obviously don’t forget your passport!
Always Pack For The UK Weather
Even if you’re travelling to the UK in July-August the British weather is notoriously changeable in that it could be 20c without a cloud in sight one day, to 8c and raining all day the next.
For this reason, always make sure to pack a coat and umbrella and appropriate shoes (not just flip-flops!).
It’s always a good idea to check the weather forecast every morning in the UK to help prepare you for the day ahead.
Book Excursions and Hotel Rooms As Soon As Possible!
This is especially important if you are travelling during the summer holidays as hotels and excursions book up fast here in Southampton (and everywhere else in the UK!).
Try to get everything booked a few months in advance if possible, especially your hotel room as they can become more expensive the later you leave it.
We have some great things to do in Southampton. Check out our blog Our Top 5 Things To Do In Southampton if you’d like help in deciding how to spend your time here!
Don’t Be Late!
Always remember that your cruise will leave with or without you. If you have excursions booked, make sure you will have plenty of time to get back to your cruise ship. Never leave it until the last minute and always leave plenty of extra time in case your excursions run late or you get stuck in traffic etc.
Missing your ship can be incredibly expensive and stressful as you’ll need to arrange your own travel to the next port, to catch your ship. Don’t risk it!
Enjoy Every Moment
If you prepare everything in advance and have all of your documentation in order, your cruise vacation should be an incredibly enjoyable experience.
Cruise ships are huge floating luxurious hotels that offer great entertainment, beautiful cabins and fabulous dining. Cruise lines that visit and depart from Southampton include P&O, Princess and MSC Cruises and all of these have fantastic ships and reputations.
We hope you enjoy both your cruise experience and your time here in Southampton, or wherever you may be visiting!
